What Prosperity Star (Lu) means
The Prosperity Star (Lu Shen) is the Day Master's Lu, the Officialdom (临官 / 建禄) branch among the twelve life stages. Traditionally it stands for livelihood, income and self-reliance: a secure living earned by one's own skill.
The Lu is a root of the Day Master, so it also means the Day Master has strength. When the Lu is clashed or void, income or position is traditionally said to be less stable.
How to read it in a chart
- Year and month pillars
- traditionally linked with early life, family and social environment.
- Day pillar
- closest to the self and to the spouse, with the most direct effect.
- Hour pillar
- linked with later life, children and long-term plans.
- Luck pillars and years
- when a luck pillar or year brings Prosperity Star (Lu), its symbolism is traditionally said to come to the fore for that period.
Traditional notes on Prosperity Star (Lu)
- Lu and Officialdom
- the Lu branch is the Officialdom stage, e.g. 甲's Lu is at 寅, 丙 and 戊's at 巳.
- Exclusive Lu and Returning Lu
- a day pillar sitting on its own Lu is “Exclusive Lu”; the Lu in the hour pillar is “Returning Lu”; both are traditionally good for self-reliance.
Common misconceptions
- Prosperity Star (Lu) does not guarantee a smooth life; an auspicious star that is clashed or in Void works more weakly.
- Symbolic stars are traditional supporting information and cannot decide fortune on their own; read them with the Ten Gods and the Five Phases.
- Schools find some stars differently; FateSign uses the same rules as its calculator, listed in full on the methodology page.
