Indirect Wealth (偏财) in BaZi
The star of opportunity and flowing money
Short answer
Indirect Wealth (Pian Cai, 偏财) is the Heavenly Stem your Day Master controls, with the same yin-yang polarity. Traditionally it stands for opportunity, money in motion, business sense and a generous, sociable nature; among family roles it is the father star, and in a man's chart also romantic partners. Whether it works for you depends on whether the Day Master is strong enough to handle it.

How to find the Indirect Wealth
Take the phase your Day Master controls, then the stem of that phase with the same polarity. For a Jia (Yang Wood) Day Master, Wood controls Earth and the Yang Earth stem is Wu, so Wu is Jia's Indirect Wealth. The branches Chen and Xu, whose main qi is Wu, also count as Indirect Wealth.
| Day Master | Indirect Wealth (stem) | Indirect Wealth (branch, main qi) |
|---|---|---|
| 甲 Jia · Yang Wood | 戊 Wu · Yang Earth | 辰 Chen, 戌 Xu |

What Indirect Wealth means traditionally
Indirect Wealth is outside resources the Day Master takes hold of, but less fixed than Direct Wealth: opportunities, deals, investments, side income, money that comes fast and goes fast. When it works well, the person is traditionally described as quick-witted, generous, sociable and good at timing.
Wealth is something the Day Master must handle, so its value depends on strength. A strong Day Master with strong Indirect Wealth is the classic picture of making big money; a weak Day Master facing lots of it is “Wealth heavy, self weak”, burdened by money or surrounded by chances it can't hold on to.
Indirect Wealth in each pillar
- Year pillar
- often read as a family with some means, or a father who mattered a lot early on.
- Month pillar
- Indirect Wealth as the month's main qi that also shows in a stem forms the Indirect Wealth structure (偏财格), suited to business, sales, investment and other work with money in motion.
- Day branch
- the spouse palace. Indirect Wealth here is traditionally read as a capable, generous partner; in a man's chart, nurturing the relationship matters.
- Hour pillar
- later life and children; often read as opportunistic income later on, or children in business.
Classic combinations
- Wealth produces Killings (财生杀)
- Indirect Wealth feeds Seven Killings, turning resources into power and pressure. With a strong Day Master it means carrying big responsibility; with a weak one, old texts warn that Wealth feeds a Killing the self can't bear.
- Companions rob Wealth (比劫夺财)
- plenty of Parallel Shoulder and Rob Wealth against weak Indirect Wealth, traditionally read as money being split; partnerships call for care.
- Output produces Wealth (食神生财)
- the Eating God or Hurting Officer feeds Indirect Wealth, so talent and expertise turn into opportunities and income.
- Wealth restrains the Owl (偏财制枭)
- Indirect Wealth controls the Indirect Seal, undoing “Owl steals the Food” and letting held-back talent flow again.
Common misconceptions
- Indirect Wealth is not windfalls or lottery wins. It describes a feel for opportunity and resources in motion, not luck.
- More Indirect Wealth does not mean more money. With a weak Day Master, more Wealth is a burden.
- Indirect Wealth in a man's chart does not mean infidelity; it is an old family-role analogy, not a judgement of character.
- No single Ten God decides a chart; read it together with the Day Master's strength, the structure and the useful god.

What does an Indirect Wealth luck pillar or year mean?
Traditionally business opportunities, investment and social contact all increase. A strong Day Master tends to seize them; a weak one should act within its means and avoid overextending.
