Direct Officer (正官) in BaZi
The star of rules and responsibility
Short answer
The Direct Officer (Zheng Guan, 正官) is the Heavenly Stem that controls your Day Master and has the opposite yin-yang polarity. Traditionally it stands for rules, order, responsibility and reputation, and in a woman's chart it is read as the husband star. It is neither good nor bad on its own: what it means depends on the Day Master's strength and the rest of the chart.

How to find the Direct Officer
Finding it takes one step: take the phase that controls your Day Master, then pick the stem of that phase with the opposite polarity. For a Jia (Yang Wood) Day Master, Metal controls Wood and the Yin Metal stem is Xin, so Xin is Jia's Direct Officer. The branch You, whose main qi is Xin, also counts as a Direct Officer.
| Day Master | Direct Officer (stem) | Direct Officer (branch, main qi) |

What the Direct Officer means traditionally
The Direct Officer stands for outside order: rules, superiors, social standing and self-restraint. When it is clear and well supported in a chart, the person is traditionally described as principled, reliable and responsible, and at home in organisations with clear structures.
With too many Officers, or a weak Day Master, the same force turns into pressure: worrying about others' opinions, rigidity, reluctance to break rules. Hence the classic line that a strong Day Master welcomes the Officer while a weak one fears it.
The Direct Officer in each pillar
- Year pillar
- early environment and family culture; often read as a strict upbringing or early contact with institutions and authority.
- Month pillar
- the month branch shapes the chart's structure most. A Direct Officer as the month's main qi that also shows in a stem is the classic Direct Officer structure (正官格), associated with stable, institutional or managerial paths.
- Day branch
- the spouse palace. In a woman's chart, a Direct Officer here is traditionally read as a steady, responsible partner.
- Hour pillar
- later life, children and long-term goals; often read as reputation and order mattering more later on.
Classic combinations
- Officer and Seal support each other (官印相生)
- the Direct Officer feeds the Direct Seal, which feeds the Day Master. Duty and learning reinforce each other; traditionally good for exams and promotion.
- Wealth feeds the Officer (财官相生)
- Direct Wealth produces the Direct Officer, so practical gains back up status and credibility.
- Hurting Officer meets Officer (伤官见官)
- the Hurting Officer attacks the Direct Officer, a picture of challenging rules and clashing with authority. Old texts call it a source of endless trouble; modern readings treat it as a tension to manage, and look for a Seal that can resolve it.
- Mixed Officer and Killings (官杀混杂)
- Direct Officer and Seven Killings both show with similar strength, traditionally read as divided direction and pressure from several sides, unless one of them is combined away or restrained.
Common misconceptions
- Having a Direct Officer does not mean you will hold office. It describes how you relate to rules and responsibility, not a job title.
- A Direct Officer is not automatically good. With a weak Day Master, more Officers mean more pressure.
- A woman's chart without a Direct Officer does not mean an unhappy marriage. Seven Killings can also act as the husband star, and Officer stars appear in luck pillars and years.
- No single Ten God decides a chart; read it together with the Day Master's strength, the structure and the useful god.
Frequently asked questions
How do I know if my chart has a Direct Officer?
Enter your birth details in the free calculator. The Ten God row labels every stem, and Direct Officers hidden in the branches are listed too. You can also use the table above with your Day Master.
What is the difference between Direct Officer and Seven Killings?
Both control the Day Master. The Direct Officer has the opposite polarity and controls gently, like rules you can follow. Seven Killings has the same polarity and controls more directly and forcefully, traditionally standing for pressure, competition and drive.
What does a Direct Officer luck pillar or year mean?
Traditionally, matters of rules, positions, evaluations and marriage (especially in a woman's chart) come to the fore. Whether that is helpful depends on whether the Officer is favourable for that Day Master.
