Tomb (墓) in BaZi
The stage of storage and saving
Short answer
Tomb (Mu, 墓) is the ninth of the Twelve Life Stages, life laid to rest and stored away. Traditionally it stands for withdrawal, saving, preservation and hidden potential, and it is also called Storage (库): strength has not vanished, it has been put away, waiting to be opened.

How to find the Tomb
Count from the Day Master: Yang stems forward from Birth, Yin stems backward. Jia's Birth is Hai, so eight steps forward, Wei, is Jia's Tomb; Yi's Birth is Wu, so eight steps backward, Xu, is Yi's Tomb. The table shows the Tomb branch for each of the ten Day Masters.
| Day Master | Branch at Tomb |
|---|---|
| 甲 Jia · Yang Wood | 未 Wei |
| 乙 Yi · Yin Wood | 戌 Xu |
| 丙 Bing · Yang Fire | 戌 Xu |
| 丁 Ding · Yin Fire | 丑 Chou |
| 戊 Wu · Yang Earth | 戌 Xu |
| 己 Ji · Yin Earth | 丑 Chou |
| 庚 Geng · Yang Metal | 丑 Chou |
| 辛 Xin · Yin Metal | 辰 Chen |
| 壬 Ren · Yang Water | 辰 Chen |
| 癸 Gui · Yin Water | 未 Wei |
What Tomb means traditionally
Tomb is the storage stage: strength, resources and experience are put away rather than displayed. A Day Master sitting on Tomb is traditionally described as thrifty, cautious and focused on saving, good at keeping and managing things, careful in what they do, but sometimes conservative and reserved.
Because Tomb is also Storage, it is not just an ending but a store. Old texts say a storage must be clashed open: when Chen, Xu, Chou or Wei meets a clash or punishment, what is stored comes out, so Tomb is often linked with long accumulation followed by sudden release.
How to read it in a chart
- Day branch
- a Day Master sitting on Tomb (e.g. Bing Xu, Ren Chen, Ding Chou, Gui Wei) is traditionally read as reserved and keen on saving, slow to warm up in love but lasting.
- Month branch
- meeting Tomb in the month means the birth season does not favour the Day Master; look for its roots in the other pillars.
- Year and hour pillars
- Tomb there is often read as a low-key phase focused on building up.
- Luck pillars and years
- a Tomb period is traditionally better for holding than attacking; if a clash opens the storage, resources may be released or things may change.
Related ideas
- The four storages
- Chen, Xu, Chou and Wei store Water, Fire, Metal and Wood respectively (Earth is placed with Fire or Water depending on the school); every Yang stem's Tomb falls on one of these four.
- Clashing open the storage
- the Chen–Xu and Chou–Wei clashes are traditionally said to open the stores, bringing release and change.
- Tomb and Death
- Death is activity stopping; Tomb is being stored away. Termination comes next, and then a new cycle.
Common misconceptions
- “Tomb” in a chart does not mean graves, death or disaster; it is the metaphorical name of a life stage.
- Sitting on Tomb does not mean being trapped; it is more about saving and potential.
- The life stages alone cannot tell you the Day Master's strength; read them with the month, the balance of the phases and the structure.
Frequently asked questions
How do I see Tomb in my own chart?
Enter your birth details in the free calculator. The life stage row shows your Day Master's stage at each branch, and the self stage row shows each pillar's stem on its own branch. You can also use the table above.
Are Tomb and Storage the same?
Usually they are two names for the same position: “Tomb” from the life-stage view, “Storage” from the storing view. Chen, Xu, Chou and Wei are the four storages.
What does a Day Master sitting on Tomb mean?
Traditionally reserved, careful and focused on saving, with the potential for a slow build and a big release. How it plays out depends on the Day Master's strength and whether a clash opens the storage.
