BaZi glossary · Twelve Life Stages
Illness (病) in BaZi
The stage of sensitivity and reflection
Short answer
Illness (Bing, 病) is the seventh of the Twelve Life Stages, old age and failing strength. Traditionally it does not mean being sick; it stands for strength that has waned and turned inward: sensitive, considerate and imaginative, and prone to worry.

How to find the Illness
Count from the Day Master: Yang stems forward from Birth, Yin stems backward. Jia's Birth is Hai, so six steps forward, Si, is Jia's Illness; Yi's Birth is Wu, so six steps backward, Zi, is Yi's Illness. The table shows the Illness branch for each of the ten Day Masters.
| Day Master | Branch at Illness |
|---|---|
| 甲 Jia · Yang Wood | 巳 Si |
| 乙 Yi · Yin Wood | 子 Zi |
| 丙 Bing · Yang Fire | 申 Shen |
| 丁 Ding · Yin Fire | 卯 Mao |
| 戊 Wu · Yang Earth | 申 Shen |
| 己 Ji · Yin Earth | 卯 Mao |
| 庚 Geng · Yang Metal | 亥 Hai |
| 辛 Xin · Yin Metal | 午 Wu |
| 壬 Ren · Yang Water | 寅 Yin |
| 癸 Gui · Yin Water | 酉 You |
What Illness means traditionally
Illness is where strength turns from outward to inward: the body less robust, the mind more delicate. A Day Master sitting on Illness is traditionally described as sensitive, considerate, empathetic and imaginative, suited to work that needs careful observation and empathy, but prone to melancholy and low energy.
“Illness” is only a life-cycle metaphor and has nothing directly to do with health. What it signals is that the Day Master is weaker here and benefits from Seals and Companions, and should pace itself.
How to read it in a chart
- Day branch
- a Day Master sitting on Illness (e.g. Bing Shen, Ren Yin, Ding Mao, Gui You) is traditionally read as perceptive and understanding, valuing emotional connection in relationships.
- Month branch
- meeting Illness in the month means the birth season does not favour the Day Master, which usually leans weak.
- Year and hour pillars
- Illness there is often read as a phase needing more care, or interests leaning toward art, the inner life and helping others.
- Luck pillars and years
- an Illness period is traditionally a time to rest and recover rather than overspend energy.
Related ideas
- Decline, Illness, Death
- strength fades step by step through these three; Illness sits in the middle, weaker than Decline but more active than Death.
- Not a symbolic star
- “Illness” in the chart is a life stage, not an illness-related symbolic star, and it cannot be used to judge health.
Common misconceptions
- Illness does not mean you will fall ill; it is a metaphorical name for a stage.
- A Day Master sitting on Illness is not necessarily weak; strength is judged from the month and the whole chart.
- The life stages alone cannot tell you the Day Master's strength; read them with the month, the balance of the phases and the structure.
