Prosperity (帝旺) in BaZi

The peak of the life cycle

Short answer

Prosperity (Di Wang, 帝旺) is the fifth of the Twelve Life Stages, the prime of life and the peak of a career: the greatest strength and the most command. Traditionally it stands for confidence, leadership and nerve, and also for rigidity and stubbornness. What peaks must decline, so Prosperity is also the stage that most needs restraint.

How to find the Prosperity

Count from the Day Master: Yang stems forward from Birth, Yin stems backward. Jia's Birth is Hai, so four steps forward, Mao, is Jia's Prosperity; Yi's Birth is Wu, so four steps backward, Yin, is Yi's Prosperity. The table shows the Prosperity branch for each of the ten Day Masters.

What Prosperity means traditionally

Prosperity is strength at its fullest: confident, decisive, willing to take charge, with natural leadership. A Day Master sitting on Prosperity is traditionally described as strong-minded and determined, not one to give in, suited to positions that call for leading and deciding.

The other side is being too hard: strong pride, unwillingness to compromise, a tendency to clash. Old texts say what peaks must decline, and Decline does come next, so this strength most needs an Officer or Killings to guide it, or Output stars to release it.

How to read it in a chart

Day branch
a Day Master sitting on Prosperity (e.g. Bing Wu, Ren Zi, Ding Si, Gui Hai) is traditionally read as strong-willed and opinionated; Bing Wu, Wu Wu and Ren Zi are also called “Day Blade” (日刃), calling for patience in marriage.
Month branch
meeting Prosperity in the month means birth in the Day Master's strongest season, so it usually leans strong; for a Yang stem this is the Goat Blade structure (羊刃格).
Year and hour pillars
Prosperity there is often read as high energy and a competitive streak in that phase.
Luck pillars and years
a Prosperity period traditionally brings drive and chances to shine; with an already strong Day Master, watch for impulsiveness and conflict.

Related ideas

Goat Blade (羊刃)
the Prosperity branch of a Yang stem is called the Goat Blade, fierce strength that old texts say needs Seven Killings to control it, and with that control becomes authority.
Day Blade (日刃)
a day pillar sitting on its own Goat Blade (Bing Wu, Wu Wu, Ren Zi), traditionally a fiery, action-driven day pillar.
Peak and decline
Decline follows Prosperity, a reminder that the strongest moment is also where things start to turn.

Common misconceptions

  • Prosperity does not guarantee good luck or leadership. With an already overstrong Day Master, it unbalances the chart.
  • The Prosperity branch of a Yin stem is usually not called a Goat Blade; the Goat Blade mainly refers to Yang stems, and schools differ on “Yin blades”.
  • The life stages alone cannot tell you the Day Master's strength; read them with the month, the balance of the phases and the structure.

Frequently asked questions

How do I see Prosperity in my own chart?

Enter your birth details in the free calculator. The life stage row shows your Day Master's stage at each branch, and the self stage row shows each pillar's stem on its own branch. You can also use the table above.

Are Prosperity and the Goat Blade the same?

For the five Yang stems, the Prosperity branch is the Goat Blade (Jia Mao, Bing Wu, Wu Wu, Geng You, Ren Zi). “Goat Blade” stresses how fierce that strength is and that it needs restraint; Yin stems are usually not said to have one.

Is it good for the Day Master to sit on Prosperity?

Traditionally it means strong, commanding energy, which is both an asset and a challenge. If the chart needs a strong Day Master it helps; if the Day Master is already too strong, Officers or Output stars are needed for balance.
